The legendary British noise rock/psychedelic rock band Terminal Cheesecake recently came out with a new full-length album in nearly 20 years. Due to their relative cult status it is safe to say that the impending release of the new Terminal Cheesecake album built up a lot of expectations, and apparently the album not surprisingly turned out to be rather good.
The first track on the album is titled ''Birds In 6/8'' and it starts off with some repetitive drum patterns accompanied by an occasional barging in of some distortion laden bass sounds that evolve into more concrete repetitive noise rock riffage and some psyched out half-avant garde guitar impro on top of that. It is the ending of the track though that really kicks ass. ''Poultice'' is the title of the second track and it feels like a mixture of Electric Wizard and some southern metal for me. This means the track offers some heavy stoner doom riffage as well as some psych doom guitar improvisation on top of that. The vocals on this track also then to remind the ones on the first Sloath album. ''The Winding Path'' on the other hands starts off in a semi-experimental noise rock way only to move into a fast paced ''Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun'' for my ear. This though is a good thing of course. ''Dandelions'' is my personal favorite track from the album with its fine bass riffage and efficient spaced out guitars that remind the likes of Haikai No Ku perhaps to a certain degree. A highly addictive heavy track and by far the best this album has to offer. The fifth track ''Mr. Wipey's Daytrip To Guilford Haven''' is a rather short interlude track for me, but not a boring one at that, while the penultimate ''Song For John Pt.1 '' offers a distortion and feedback laden 8 minute long far-out psychedelic noise rock jam. The album is brought to a close by ''Lord Jagged (The Chemical Teacake Quintet'' which is a rather experimental/avant-garde drone infused noise rock piece that reminds the likes of Fushitsusha or Keiji Haino, but in a completely Terminal Cheesecake kind of way.
All in all ''Dandelion Sauce Of The Ancients'' didn't dissappoint as a whole, while the highlights of the album are definitely ''Birds In 6/8'', ''Poultice'' and ''Dandelions''. The album offers a mixture of noise rock, psych rock, psychedelic noise rock as well as stoner doom for that matter, and does have an eclectic feel to it. This however can be seen as something positive in my opinion.
