My Jerusalem is a band who caught music world’s attention instantly. Founder Jeff Klein had played with The Twilight Singers and The Gutter Twins before he decided to try out something new. My Jerusalem released one EP and three full length studio albums, including the newest one titled A Little Death.
Alongside Klein, the band members are Jon Merz, Kyle Robarge and Grant Van Amburgh. Their debut Gone for Good was on a trace of Klein’s ex-bands, but it brought the strong post-punk vibe. The sophomore release, Preachers, saw the band exploring even deeper, darkwave style.
A Little Death is truly powerful and interesting album. The sound and the style are undeniably post-punk and darkwave, fused with Jeff Klein’s gorgeous baritone, conspicuous guitars and obscure sections. I can’t stop repeating the album. Post-punk the band plays is not as intense as expected, especially when it comes to guitar sections. They are mostly subtle and decent, almost faded into background. All of the instruments are in heavenly cohesion, and everything is spiced with incredibly strong vocal.
Darkness is a bit softer on A Little Death in comparison with their earlier efforts. It is more oriented towards rock, but it still delivers some pretty dark tones, such as in Flashes and Young and Worthless. The biggest hit from the album is No One Gonna Give You Love, a poignant post-punk number with characteristic chorus. It falls somewhere between ballade and anthem, but it sounds just as alternative hit song should sound.
It’s Torture and Dominoes are the most cutting, and probably the most eclectic tracks. Klein’s voice reaches its climax here. His vocal is perfect for dark-toned songs, which is proved in almost every song. Nonetheless, he can pull of easier melodies as well.
A Little Death is a high quality piece of music, bulletproof of any weak spots. Every song could be a hit. The album can be played on repeat without boring you after several times. My Jerusalem may be a small band, but this is the album that is going to help them get wider attention. The refreshment is possible.
