The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Third World Pyramid

The Brian Jonestown Massacre recently came out with a new album titled ''Third World Pyramid''. Of course The Brian Jonestown Massacre doesn't need much of an introduction, having released a great number of critically acclaimed albums within the realm of psychedelic rock/neo-psych/garage rock through the years. What is interesting about ''Third World Pyramid'' in particular is that it features quite a bit of collaborating artists such as Tess Parks or Katy Lane.

The new album starts off with a track titled ''Good Mourning'' and it essentially packs a lo-fi melodic folky track with an indie rock feel to it, and if I am not mistaken it also features Tess Parks on the vocals. ''Government Beard'' is the title of the second track, and this one tends to move more in the realm of high-tempo neo-psychedelia or psychedelic rock. The track is rather catchy in a good way and offers a fine forward propelling rhythm section, as well as some fine reverberating guitar bits. ''Don't Get Lost'' is the third track on the album, and it again packs some neo-psych with a bit mellower atmosphere than the previous track. All in all the track sounds a lot like earlier The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and is one of the best tracks on the album. ''Assignment Song'' also tends to be somewhat similar in structure, but not as addictive as the previous couple of tracks. Nevertheless it offers a mixture of mellow meandering neo-psych and folkish indie. The fifth track ''Oh Brother'' has a bit of a Mexican or South-American feel to it, with the following title track ''Third World Pyramid'' somewhat reminding the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain to me for some reason. Another interesting track is the penultimate ''Lunar Surf Graveyard'', which sounds like surf rock for a soundtrack to an old Western. The track has a somewhat eerie ambush kind of feel to it. ''The Sun Ship'' is the title of the last track on the album, and this one packs a somewhat mellower and more up-beat atmosphere in comparison to the track that preceded it.

All in all the ''Third World Pyramid'' offers the usual kind of The Brian Jonestown Massacre material, while being somewhat mellower in an indie rock and folk kind of manner than their previous releases. There are some great tracks on the album, such as ''Don't Get Lost'' or ''Government Beard'', while there are a lot of somewhat dull folkish indie tracks that don't seem to be moving anywhere. While saying this the album is pretty good overall and suitable for anyone who is looking for some mellow neo-psych with a lo-fi folkish indie feel to it.
