Being a bassist, I am fully aware of the limitations of the instrument - it’s a low-ranged instrument, very hard to play chords on or solo. But in the hands of a master it can do miracles (remember Jaco?!) and sound as exciting or warm as any other lead instrument. Such a creative genius is Juan Alderete which most of you know as the bassist of Mars Volta. He now leads a band called Big Sir together with the amazing singer Lisa Papineau. Juan’s bass lines are melodic and rhythmic at the same time while Lisa’s vocals cut through the bass frequencies like a razor knife. This particular song called “G7” is from their eponymous debut album which launched the band into the music scene in 2000. It’s a folk-like melody laid over Juan’s mellow bass line, played with a waltz beat. The rest of the record is also excellent, so I would recommend to all music-lovers to include Big Sir in their daily playlists and listening sessions. Enjoy!
