The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble are a pretty interesting dark jazz/electronic music/doom jazz/psych rock band from Holland. Their discography is relatively vast and involves a set of albums, as well as quite many EPs. One of the more interesting releases among these is the ''Mutations EP'' - an album they released back in 2009.

The album starts off with a track titled ''Caos Calmo'' and it packs some eerie dark jazz/doom jazz with electronic music influences and haunting female vocals. The second track ''München'' packs some more tempo and tends to be a bit more fast paced with its forward propelling bassline, and interesting guitar sounds, but nevertheless carries on with an almost opium infused atmosphere. ''Serpents'' follows on from this in a more ambient and slower dark jazz way, whereas ''Twisted Horizons'' offers some distortion laden noisy guitar riffage similar to that of Nadja or Aidan Baker. This rather heavy track is followed by ''Shadows'' - a track that sounds like wandering some meandering snowy streets at night after quite many drinks in some bar before. ''Shadows'' is also the pinnacle of this interesting EP, as the three following tracks tend to be pretty ambient and not on the level of the tracks that preceded them. Nevertheless the ambient tracks in the end complete the album well, and thus serve their purpose.

All in all the ''Mutations EP'' packs some pretty interesting and eerie dark jazz/doom jazz/psych and offers an interesting mixture of dark jazz, psych rock and even occasionally bits that could be characterized as droney noise rock. An album worth checking out.
