Music listeners who began their acquiantance with Baltimore duo Wye Oak after the release of their fourth album, Shriek (2014), didn't have to accept the fact that vocalist Jenn Wasner had decided to drop her signature guitar in favor of bass, or the fact that drummer/keyboardist Andy Stack had decided to dabble in electronics. Unburdened by expectations based on what Wye Oak used to sound like, its much easier to appreciate Wasner's mesmerizing vocal prowess on the record - which Pitchfork's Harley Brown describes as "[taking] up more space on this record, going deeper and flitting over Stack’s melodies with such abandon it’s as if she might float away ...she sings more confidently and with a broader range".
"Logic of Color", the last track on the album, also display's the duo's strengths as songwriters (which has earned them comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Annie Lennox). With crystal-clear clarity, Wasner brings out the easy listening qualities of the 90s pop genre that she had grew up listening to (think of The Corrs, or Madonna at the beginning of her career) while fleshing out the metaphysics of intimacy:
"Give to me and I’ll give backLet’s lock eyes here in real timeYour illogical deviceMy illegible commandSo the logic of color is allThe logic of my skinThe color of your eyesOur eyes
