Ulaan Khol - I

Ulaan Khol are one of the many projects of Steven R. Smith, and one of the slowest and noisiest for that matter. There are quite a few albums under the Ulaan Khol banner, but the best one among them is probably the very first one. An album that is simply titled ''I'', and which was released back in 2008. Similarly to most Ulaan Khol albums the album packs some fine drone and noise infused instrumental psychedelia.

While the album title is rather laconic and straight foward, then the tracks on this album are also all titled simply as ''untitled''. The first track on this album packs some rather mellow yet noisy drone infused psych, while the second track tends to be the best one on this entire album. The track offers some catchy drumming along with some mesmerizing guitar improvisation on top of a rather catchy forward propelling noisy riff. The track is definitely transcendental as hell, but fades into to some mellow ambient drones in the second half of the song. The following tracks move back to a more mellow setting and tend to be some shoegaze and drone infused mellow psych tracks with bouts of noisier soundscapes. One of the more interesting tracks is the seventh one however. This track is somewhat similar to the second one and packs some fine improvisational guitars and some repetitive drumming on top of a noisy forward propelling psych momentum.

All in all this Ulaan Khol album packs both some noisy psych as well as some drone infused psychedelic ambience. The album is well-balanced between these two complimentary halves, and should definitely be checked out by anyone who is into noisy psychedelia.
