Lightning Bolt is a renowned American avant-garde noise rock/math rock band. The duo who make up this great genre surpassing noise rock band have released a great number of albums through the years, but one of their best albums to date is perhaps ''Fantasy Empire''. An album that they released only as recently as last year.
The album starts off with a track titled ''The Metal East'' and packs some trademark fast paced noise rock/math rock with prog influences. The track is alright as far as Lightning Bolt goes, but the second track ''Over The River and Through The Woods'' tends to pack some more variation along with some pretty catchy and rather heavy mathrock riffage, which moves into an almost psychedelic rock mode in the second half of the song. The third track ''Horsepower'' puts forth some rather fast paced and heavy noise rock, while ''King Of The World'' goes into a more progressive mathrock mode. The fifth track ''Mythmaster'' starts off almost like a rather slow paced sludge track, only to move into some fast paced mathrock between the sludgy slowness. The sixth track meanwhile starts off almost like an Eyehategod track, and packs some rather good heavyness throughout. The last two tracks ''Dream Genie'' and ''Snow White (& The 7 Dwarves Fans)'' pack some fine fast paced heavy noise rock as well, with the latter being the better one.
All in all ''Fantasy Empire'' tends to be good from start to finish, and offers some truly amazing prog and sludge influenced noise rock/math rock. The great thing about this album is that most of the tracks tend to be interesting and there aren't really many weak links, and that is why this album is so good as a whole.
