A New Sound for the Times

The Velvet Underground, a quite famous yet not the most popular band. During its early years in the 60’s, the group wasn’t drawing a base like some of the more popular rock and roll bands. They were noticed by an artist named Andy Warhole, who decided to fund and help produce their first album. The band, upon Warhole’s request, featured female singer, Nico, who gave the albums music a distinct taste to the vocals.  Not only this, but the instrumentals of the album are perfect. The guitar is a simple chord progression, the drums are your standard faster-slower “hold a rhythm” beat, and the electric violin tops it all off. Combined together, it makes for a very original sound.

This original sound wasn’t heard of by most mainstream musicians and critics during the album’s release. Listeners questioned what exactly they were listening to, it wasn’t your standard rock album. In fact, the first song on the album sounds almost more like a pop song than a rock song. However, the album is regarded as one of the great rock albums of its time.

If you have ever had the privilege to listen to the album on vinyl, let alone on your iPhone, you will not only be intrigued by the music but also the unique album sleeve. On the inside of the sleeve you will notice several different quotations by critics describing their opinion on the album. You might notice that some of them aren’t the most positive, in fact all of them are negative. This is because the band decided to put all of these negative reviews in their albums sleeve on purpose. It’s interesting to see all of these different critiques on such a beautiful album.
