The Pain In The Songs of Kurt Cobain

It is not a shame or a lie to say that after Nevermind came out, Kurt Cobain was feeling the pinch of the drugs, the money, and the fast and loose lifestyle. You could tell there were layers of misconstrued anger pent up in his body, mind, and soul. He just had to get it out. It is evident from the first track that there was a lot going on with bouts of depression, and a feeling of wanting to jump from tall buildings to escape reality. That really sounds familiar.  We’ve all had this feeling, but for Cobain it was deeper. By the end of 1993 after the release of In Utero, Cobain was disillusioned with the idea of making money and going on tour. He may well have been fried by all the drugs he did while in the group. He just wanted to withdraw from the whole scene, but family and friends, including Courtney Love would see to it that he was pushed to the absolute edge.

Songs like “Been A Son,” “Aneurysm,” “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” among many others hint at the dark nature of love of music and drugs and how they make one lose their mind, which is what happened to Cobain. He claimed to get caught up in all the fame, glitz, and glamor—stuff that he never held sacred. This is why toward the end, he was teetering off the edge and wanting to be a recluse. His very voice echoes pain and loss and it’s a heartbreaking thing to experience.
