Comets On Fire - Field Recordings From the Sun

Comets On Fire are a psychedelic noise rock band from Santa Cruz, California. They have released a wide range of albums through the years, but their best album to date is perhaps ''Field Recordings From the Sun'' - an album they released back in 2002. Comets On Fire are for the most part well known for their rather fast paced psychedelic noise rock. This is not the only side of this fine band though as they tend to mix a variety of genres from garage rock and prog rock to psych rock and space rock.

The first track on the album is titled ''Beneath The Ice Age'' and it packs some fine fast paced psychedelic noise rock in the vein of High Rise. Being similar to the music of this great Japanese psychedelic noise rock band is of course a completely welcome thing. The second track ''Return To Heaven'' essentially follows on the same path of noisy psychedelia or garage rock. Reminding perhaps the likes of Puffy Areolas. The third track ''The Unicorn'' on the other hand moves on a really mellow yet catchy psychedelic folk path, being perhaps the most interesting and most memorable tracks on this particular album. It is not only about mellow psychedelia though, but also packs a pretty noisy guitar improv ending on top of the core of folkish psych catchyness. The last two tracks on this fine album tend again to be similar to the first two, and thus they are what I would describe a mixture of High Rise and Puffy Areolas. Although perhaps a better way to describe them would be just saying they are like Comets On Fire.

All in all ''Field Recordings From the Sun'' is a pretty awesome psychedelic noise rock album, and definitely one of the best Comets On Fire albums. It is worth checking out for anyone who is into noise rock, psych rock, stoner rock or any kind of mixture of these genres, because a mixture is exactly what this album is about.
