Psychic Ills - Inner Journey Out

The renowned American psychedelic rock/neo-psych band Psychic Ills came out with a new album just about a week ago. The expectations towards Psychic Ills albums are generally rather high. Well for anyone who is into the kind of neo-psychedelia characteristic to the Psychic Ills. Their albums usually pack some rather mellow psychedelic rock with space rock and neo-psych influences, as well as some fine ambience, and this particular album is not an exception.

Most of the tracks on this album dwell in this mellow meandering and flowing neo-psychedelia that is maybe similar to The Telescopes and the likes of them, while also being true to the roots of Psychic Ills. Tracks like ''Another  Change'' and ''I don't Mind'' both pack some mellow neo-psychedelia, with the latter featuring some pretty nice female vocals by Hope Sandoval as well. The third track on the album is titled ''All Alone'' and it is perhaps the best track on this album, as it packs some fine catchy psychedelic rock. This track is not reinventing the bike, but it works really well as far as average neo-psychedelia goes. ''New Mantra'' strangely enough brings to mind bands like ''Goat'' to me, and is a pretty nice semi-interlude track. Tracks like ''Baby'' and ''No Worry'' also wander in the usual Psychic Ills-like psychedelia, with the latter packing some really cool sounds, while the last two tracks also move in the sort of realm of the more ambient and shoegazey creation of The Telescopes or Spaceman 3.

All in all this album packs some pretty fine neo-psychedelia that is quite catchy in places, and has some bright moments. Nevertheless there is a feeling that previous Psychic Ills albums have been somewhat better in offering more variety, but then again as far as neo-psych goes this album is a pretty good one.
