Kikagaku Moyo - House in the Tall Grass

Kikagaku Moyo are a well-known Japanese psychedelic rock band, who essentially mix psychedelic rock, space rock, psychedelic folk and acid folk influences. All of this makes them a rather interesting band that mixes a variety of different genres from some fine psychedelic rock to drone and raga rock with folk motives. Their latest album ''House in the Tall Grass'' came out just a short while ago, and packs some pretty interesting material.

The first track on the album is titled ''Green Grass'' and it packs some pretty mellow psychedelic rock with quite clear cut 70s acid rock influences. A meandering mellow flow of psychedelia with smooth calm vocals that evolves into a more distinct psychedelic jam in the end. The drawback of this track is that the ending is rather short and you'd wish it would go on for longer. The second track ''Kogarashi'' is perhaps my favorite track from this album, and essentially packs some mellow psychedelic rock with very catchy vocals along with garage rock, as well as slight psych folk influences. A truly awesome track. Moving forward ''Old Snow, White Snow'' is a rather folky psych track, whereas ''Melted Crystal'' also has this acid psych feel to it in its mellow dreamy ways. ''Dune'' on the other hand has a bit of a krautrock edge to it and packs some pretty fine jamming, but again the track is way too short. The longest track on the album is ''Silver Owl'' and it essentially starts off with the usual mellow psych manner, only to move into some fuzzy and heavy psych riffage in the end, along with a short Jap psych guitar solo too. ''Trad'' feels like a psych track that walked out of a Western and has quite an Americana feel to it, while the second part of the song moves into a more clear-cut psych realm.

All in all the album is rather diverse and tends to flirt with some heavier and fuzzier psychedelic rock, while always retaining its mellow psychedelic rock and acid rock feel. This is an album for anyone who is into some mellower psych with a 70s and an acid folk feel. There are a couple of great tracks, and some pretty listenable stuff. So be sure to check it out.
