Part Two: Dylan

After listening the song by Dylan you might be confused as to what it meant or what story he was trying to tell. It normally takes a few listens to grasp the lyrics, especially with the beautiful distractions that are the melody of the song. Maybe it helps to listen to it a few times, like any song that you want to understand. But this song still isn’t the easiest to grasp. I believe Dylan did this on purpose, Mr. Jones represents the mystery that is too be unveiled only by the listeners imagination. The character, “Mr. Jones” represents your average “Joe six pack” and each verse is a different interaction with Joe’s or Jones’ inner-self.

It is a bit confusing and hard to understand at times, but if you focus on what Dylan is trying to say than it unfolds as a beautiful journey of self-awareness. Are you able to separate yourself from the “everyone” crowd? To be different is to be self-aware, to be able to define who you are not to have self-assurance but to be able to bypass any sort of societal justification that might come across your plate throughout life.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to listen to this song, do it. Dylan has some great hooks in this song that will keep you listening to every verse. I really believe this one to be one of Dylan’s greatest lyrical songs he has ever produced. It is literally a beautiful poem collided with a rock/jazz melody. The outcome is magnificent. I realize I talk about Dylan a lot, but he deserves it. I plan to see him this summer in concert in Chicago, IL. He is quite old now, 85 years of age, but I want to see him to be able to say that I saw the greatest poet/musician of many generations.
