You walk into the room with your pencil in your hand
You see somebody naked and you say, “Who is that man?”
You try so hard but you don’t understand
Just what you’ll say when you get home
Because something is happening here, but you don’t know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?
This is one of my favorite songs by Dylan, both for the lyrics and the melody. It seems to be one of his more underrated songs, not many people are able to understand what exactly he is talking about. The song comes from the sixth album that Dylan wrote, “Highway 61 Revisited”, it is the final song on the album. After some analyzation, I can say that it is a great song to end an album. It leaves the audience questioning what Dylan was trying to communicate when using the mysterious character of “Mr. Jones”.
I don’t believe I need to go into detail about how much of a lyrical genius Dylan was, it has been said time and time again. He is idolized because of how he was able to liberate the mind in the same way Elvis freed the body. He brought poetry and music together in a way like no other. I believe this song to be a symbol for Dylan’s style, a poem brought to harmony with a melody. I will discuss my analysis of the song in my next post!
