Rick Wakeman's Close to the Edge

Rick Wakeman is one of the best keyboardists to emerge from the British progressive rock scene in the early seventies. He became best known as the keyboardist for “Yes,” one of the most successful bands from that scene, and also made a name for himself with his conceptual solo albums. His playing and composing abilities are undisputed, and his appearance contributes to his esoteric musical expression.

This particular piece of music showcases Wakeman’s piano playing skills (he actually intended to be a concert pianist but quit his studies at the Royal College of Music in 1969 to become a full-time session musician,) but also his emotional approach that outgrows the pure instrumental techniques. It is a rendition of one of Yes’s strongest pieces, the title track from the album “Close to the Edge” from 1972. The original track is over 18 minutes in length and takes up the entire first side of the album, consisting of four movements. Rick Wakeman comprised the song to a seven-plus minute piece but kept the main points of the original arrangement. It’s a beautiful variant of this complex song, with much more emotional input than the band’s version. It’s a real treat, especially for “Yes” fans. Enjoy!
