Mythic Sunship - Ouroboros

Mythic Sunship are a Danish instrumental psychedelic rock band, who just recently released their newest album through the renowned El Paraiso Records. The album features three lengthy tracks of fine krautrock, stoner and space rock influenced instrumental psychedelia, which essentially makes the Mythic Sunship another example of a good Scandinavian psychedelic jam band. Reminding the likes of Flowers Must Die or Causa Sui.

The album starts off with a 10 minute long track ''Ophidian Rising'', which is pretty much a no-nonsense stoner influenced psychedelic rock jam. As far as such jams go this is not a bad one, but one might think that it is quite a conventional track and does not really offer anything that new or impressive. The track is surely a fine one, but tends to get a bit lost among the multitude of psych rock bands out there today. The same can essentially be said about the second lengthy track ''Year Of The Serpent''. This track is essentially another fine piece of spaced-out instrumental psychedelia, but again perhaps nothing particularly original in the wider picture. All of this doesn't of course mean that these tracks are bad. In the context of psych rock they pretty much kick ass, and would do so especially in a live setting. Now what makes this album really worthwhile is the last massive over 20 minute long track ''Leviathan''. Now this track is not about some conventional psych. The track starts off slowly, but ends up putting forth some great kraut influenced psychedelic noise rock. The jam is massive and transcendental and offers some fine catchy psych riffage. This means I for one could surely listen to this track in a looping continous ouroboros-like manner for a long while.

All in all ''Ouroboros'' is a pretty good psychedelic rock release, and the last track ''Leviathan'' especially stands out as perhaps one of the best instrumental psych rock tracks of 2016. These Danes are surely worth checking out, and I suspect especially in a live setting.
