Ampacity - Superluminal

Ampacity is an instrumental psychedelic/space rock band from Poland. ''Superluminal'' is their second album and it came out back in 2015. The album tends to be a fine mixture of instrumental psych rock jamming in a space rock and stoner coating, while also taking on clear-cut prog rock influences as well.

The first track on the album is titled ''42'' and it definitely has some prog rock vibe to it. When I heard this track the first time I made parallels with the Finnish psychedelic prog rock band Moonwagon, and of course this is a pretty good comparison to make. The track that lasts just above 10 minutes mixes some psychedelia with a space and prog rock vibe, and unleashes some pretty far out solos. The track also has a krautish stoner psych vibe to it. All in all a great transcendental psych jam. The same can roughly be said about the second lenghty track ''Propellerbrain'', which mixes prog and space rock and psychedelia once more. This album also follows the prog rock way of shifting patterns throughout the jams though, which means the tracks do not get boring along the way. Although for a krauthead these shifts may ruin some perfectly good psychedelic repetition in parts. The best track for me on this album is the mellow ''Molton Boron'', which offers some melodic and catchy meandering and wandering psychedelia. The album is worth listening solely due to this track on its own. The last two tracks move again into the stoner, space and prog rock influenced heavy psych realm, with ''Superluminal'' offering some fine krautrockish basslines and enjoyable psych repetition. It is no wonder that they named this one as the title track.

All in all ''Superluminal'' is a pretty good psych rock release, and perhaps the best Polish psychedelic rock album I have heard so far. Well if not the best Polish psych rock album, then probably the best psych rock album from Gdynia for sure. Whatever the case may be, this album is surely worth checking out.
