Carlton Melton are a renowned American instrumental psychedelic/space rock band. They have become known for their fine far out psychedelic jamming with clear-cut stoner and space rock influences. This together with touches of dronish neo-psychedelia is what these guys are all about. They have released a wide range of great albums through the years, and this year they came out with another fine album. This album is titled ''Aground'' and it came out only very recently through Agitated Records.
The new album starts off with a track titled ''Upon Your Return'', and this track packs some captivating instrumental psych jamming. The track is propelled by a fine catchy psych bassline, and krautrock infused guitars, which all give it a dreamy yet funky feel. The track almost feels like you are listening to a mellow alternative to Earthless. This track is definitely a track that stands out and encapsulates some truly fine psyched out jamming, and some awesome guitar sound in the vein of Earthless. The second track ''Simulacra'' puts forth a more mellow and dreamy atmosphere with some truly fine guitar sound once again. The drawback of this track is that it is clearly too short. The rest of tracks all pack some more mellower psych and perhaps even an ambient and droney feel, with tracks titled ''Simmer'' and ''Phildelayphia'' standing out more, and packing some slow catchy drumming.
All in all ''Aground'' is a pretty good psychedelic rock album with some fine mellow ambient soundscapes in the mix as well. The first two tracks definitely stand out more and pack some really fine and memorable psychedelia, whereas the other tracks dwell more in obscure dreamy ambience. An album defnitely worth checking out.
