A few months ago, all viewers of a Musical Award Show in the Netherlands were stunned to see Tina Turner appear on stage to present one of the evening’s most important awards.
The, hardly aged, Tina Turner has been enjoying her pension plan for many years and despite rumors of her possibly breaking this retirement to please us with another album or tour, she’s remained retired.
If you would to think that this rare public appearance would spark some sort of desire for a comeback, you are wrong. Tina Turner was just at the event to hand over a lifetime achievement award to someone she knows well and stayed friends with over the years.
Still, you could tell that Tina Turner is missed in music. Twitter exploded with tweets about her appearance and her music got back into high rotation the following week. It was amazing to see.
I’ve always loved Tina Turner. I did miss her Ike & Tina Turner revue days, because I was too young, but my first introduction to her was with the "Private Dancer" album.
It was a bit unlikely for a kid like me to like Tina Turner, who was considered a granny at school, even back in the days when she was about 46. But, she had big hair, red lips, cool clothes and those long legs. What was not to love?!
I can’t even think of a Tina Turner song that I don’t like from her solo career. She had soul, rhythm & blues, pop, rock and her voice would connect all these styles together as if each album was a storybook. Mind you, I got rid of a lot of frustration on her Bryan Adams written track “Back Where You Started” from her “Break Every Rule” album. I danced to most of her “Private Dancer” album and used to imitate her moves (before Beyonce did it).
Most of her songs also tell stories, which you know, by now, I have a weak for. They are a bit dramatic at times, but they paint the picture really well. In fact, her life has been one of the first stories of a pop star that I’ve ever researched. It will always be a remarkable achievement how she managed to get away from an abusive marriage and then went on to become one of the biggest icons in music.
She’s simply still one of the best, and as I said, not forgotten at all.
