Al Lover is a one-man psychedelic rock band from San Francisco. It is however quite difficult to attach any kind particular genres to the music of Al Lover. His albums tend to have influences from a variety of different interlapping genres. His latest album ''Zodiak Versions'' essentially mixes elements from psychedelia, drone, garage rock, krautrock, electronic music and tends to have clear minimalist tendencies. This is however nothing new to someone who has listened to Al Lover's previous albums.
The best song on this album for me is probably ''Kosmische Music In Dub'', which sounds very similar to the music of the German krautrock legend Walter Wegmüller. When I istened to this song, the first thing that popped to my head was that this song sounds quite a bit like Walter Wegmüller's ''Der Herrscher''. Well the tracks are not that similar in structure as they are in sound. Either way it is a very welcome thing. While this song stands out from the lot, then the album is consistently good. Tracks like ''Zodiak Versions'', ''Earth People'' or ''Studio Einer Dub'' all have distinctly great basslines. Some of them venturing near dub, while others working their way through slow psychedelia. The album is also dreamy from start to finish and could be summed up by calling it enchanting. One must listen to tracks like ''Ranking Roedelius'' in order to understand the dreamy minimalist essence of this album. Repetitive drums on top of low feedback filled slow basslines that are complemented by some very enchanting guitars and electronics.
My favorite Al Lover album to date has probably been ''Sacred Drugs'', but ''Zodiak Versions'' easily rivals with that album. In its own minimalisti psych realm Al Lover seems to be continuously one of the more interesting artists. Be sure to check out this great droneish psych.
