Suede Knows Saudade

The wait is over and it wasn’t even a long wait. After Bloodspots in 2013, which represented a sound shift, the seventh album by Suede is here. Night Thoughts is the album supported by a movie of the same title.

Suede were always Britpop stars, from the 90s until now. They confirmed their status with this album. The little shift in sound they have made under the influence of post punk did not distract them from their recognizable essence. The producer of the album is Ed Buller. Suede were collaborating with him for a long time so it’s probably why they still sound like they should sound – like them. This album is definitely a step up.

Night Thoughts is an intellectual record, but we are used to it. Main themes include youngness, time, rebel, relationships. Brett Anderson and his writing skills are developing with each new album. He is now preoccupied with future, maturity, individuality, apathy, inertion, inspiration. Brett and Suede are never going to get old because this album is equally passionate as any of their first ones.

The intro When You Are Young emphasizes the previous with both music and lyrics. It is a very good introduction to the mystic sound of the record. If I had to point my finger at hit single, it would be Outsiders. It connects old Suede with the modern twist from their previous record. Suede are both non conformists and respectful of their own tradition. They tend to interpret themselves in a new manner.

Most of the songs are in a low key tempo, but there is always Britpop nerve present. Just listen to I don’t Know How To Reach You and I Can’t Give Her What She Wants and you will understand what I mean. Tightrope in the middle is an intermezzo par excellence. The story from the start closes perfectly with When You Were Young. I only wished it lasted forever.

Night Thoughts is a sequel of a success story. The biggest advantage of the album is connection between the old and the new. Suede are capable of being loyal and inventive. Bravo.
