Papir hail from Denmark and they are a pretty well-known instrumental krautrock/psychedelic rock band. They have released a number of great albums during the last half a decade or so. The most notable of which is perhaps the split collaboration album with Electric Moon, while I couldn't really have any complaints over any of their albums so far. One of my personal favorites from them is however an album titled IIII, which was released back in 2014 by El Paraiso Records. It packs a fine mix of flowing and constantly evolving psychedelic rock with a jam session feel that sometimes has a krautrock and other times a slight post-rock atmosphere to it.
The tracks on this album don't really have titles as they simply go from IIII.I to IIII.IIII, pointing towards the jam session style psychedelic rock that is so very characteristic of Papir. All of the tracks tend of have a sort of ascending or transcending atmosphere to them, as they evolve gradually from mellower krautrock or post-rock to a more progressive, stoner and psych rock realm. It also must be said that the album feels highly dreamy. Especially the first half of almost every particular jam. Bringing about images of idyllic wind swept Danish coastlines, followed by images of driving around on a coastal highway. And while there are plenty of bands that go about the mellow postrockish psych, then these Danes dwell in it just long enough for it not to get boring. The album also packs plenty of fuzz and distortion driven neokraut psych rock, with catchy repetitive basslines and far out echo driven jamming. All of this makes it a very balanced album that is consistent from start to finish, and highly memorable. Which in itself is hard for a jam session style psych rock album these days.
