The Cutthroats 9 are a relatively well-known band in the noise-rock genre, and their latest album Dissent has probably been their best album to date. Anyone who is into Unsane, Cherubs, Brainbombs or Narcosatanicos, should really love this particular release by The Cutthroats 9, as it packs some no-nonsense heavy distortion filled raw noise-rock. And what is more important, Dissent captures essentially the Unsane-like catchyness as well. Very much in the vein of early Unsane in parts.
The album starts off with a track titled Speak, and this track speaks exceedingly well in the language of raw yet catcy noise rock riffs, as it is one heavy marbel of a track. The same can be said about the second track Trouble, as well as the third one titled Eraser. All of these tracks essentially pack some really fine noise rock riffage, along with some fine solos in the vein of Unsane dropping in every now and then. Meanwhile the vocals are also very Unsane, Cherubs and The Catalyst-like and have a hardcore feel to them. The best tracks on this album though are undoubtedly Hit The Ground and We Could, which are one of those noise rock tracks that will get stuck in your mind for a long time, and won't leave. The keyword is heavy sludgy catchyness. We Could also packs some fine harmonica action (or at least a similar effect), which sounds very peculiar and interesting in its own right.
All in all Dissent was probably the best noise-rock album of 2014, and one of the best releases in this genre in the last few years. Easily rivaling the new Cherubs release, as well as the Danish outfit Narcosatanicos for example. A band definitely worth checking out if you are looking for some raw no-nonsense noise rock with some stoner metal and sludge feel to it.
