Sympathy for the Rebel - Dodge and Burn by The Dead Weather

The Dead Weather is a supergroup, where the star of the band is not actually fronting the band. Yes, I’m talking about Jack White, who is singing sporadically from behind the drum set. But Alison Mosshart is doing a hell of a good job for both of them. She came as a replacement for White when he lost his voice during a tour with The Recounters and their energies and attitudes complemented each other, making the formation of the new band a natural one. So far, they have released three albums with great acclaim, both from the critics and the audience. Of course, Jack White’s fame and his strong character were one of the main factors for the easy acceptance of the new group, but their creativity and rough energy are indisputable.

For today, I strongly recommend you give a listen to their latest album called “Dodge and Burn”, released September 2015 through Third Man Records. It immediately attracts with Jack’s incredible talent of creating simple, yet powerful riffs, a job that’s not easy at all (I sometimes wonder how Keith Richard still does it so good, after 50 years of involvement in the music business). What makes The Dead Weather’s music so interesting and rich is the potential to write melodic and well arranged ballads, hard rock songs and avant-garde blues pieces, all in one package. Mosshart’s vocals are raw, mystic and sexy and she almost represents a female version of Jim Morrison. Jack White’s drumming is simple, but convincing and groovy (he had previous experience with drumming before forming The White Stripes). Dean Fertita is playing the guitar and keyboards as if he came out of the late sixties and Jack Lawrence complements the sound just as any good bassist should. What I like most about The Dead Weather is that they sound like everything I ever loved in rock music, but like no one in particular. It’s just like the whole history of rock music was embedded in their sound, their thoughts and their attitude. And it probably is.
