Last year, it looked like Fergie was really coming back. She dropped “M.I.L.F.$” and a couple of trailers. There were reports of her filming videos across Europe while attending fashion shows and she even started doing a couple of really impressive live performances. But she somehow lost her momentum quickly after, until she, recently, picked up the visual impression she started last year.
I guess good things come to those who wait. It’s been about a decade since her last album and even though she’s been releasing new songs along the way, fans grew impatient. This shows in her latest visual, “Double Dutchess: Double vision”, that announces her comeback later this month. She has to come back with a bang, something spectacular to make up for the long wait, something Fergalicious. So, Fergie is doing a Beyoncé and releasing a visual album on September 22nd.
The promo is definitely intriguing and a bit of a trip. Visually, I do like what I see, but it all reminds me more of those videos artists show at their concerts. In particular the video for her track “Hungry”, with Rick Ross, is looking and sounding like that. It’s just not a song I would want to hear on the radio or play on Spotify, but it would be perfect to create a costume change moment in a concert. I like “You Already Know” with Nicki Minaj better. It’s taking me back to the early days of hip hop and I find this track a lot easier to get into.
Because some time has passed between recording the song and the planned release of it, reportedly, Nicki actually altered her verse on this song to remove a reference to ex-boyfriend Meek Mill. But I also spot a bit of a change in Fergie. For the longest time, I’ve considered her a girlie girl. A fashion obsessed artist who’s been able to connect to an r&b and pop audience. Now, I think she’s kind of struggling between the two worlds and is trying to find a balance between being a hot chick for the Black Eyed Peas fans and the pop girl for everyone else. I’m really curious to see how she pulls that off with the new album, “Double Dutchess”. Perhaps that’s what she means by double dutchess.
At least she’s back on everybody’s radar. Fergie is a good singer and I’m hoping for some great melodic tracks or ballads, even though I know I have to expect some beat driven tracks as well.
