The comback game well played

R&B group 112 were one of those groups who’ve had big successes in the States, but I’ve mainly heard of them when they featured on tracks by others (a track with Allure and a track with P. Diddy). It was a little bit later that I got to find out what the fuzz was about and started listening to their hits such as ”Anywhere” and “It’s Over Now”.

There’s always an interesting dynamic when it comes to these groups once they try to do comebacks. It looks like members drop in and drop out at will, and for whatever reason these groups struggle to find some stability. Usually, there’s something going on about money. The same goes for 112. In short, the group has been trying to come back since 2010, but it’s all a bit stop-and-go, and more importantly, no new music ever made it out.

But this time, the line-up features all original members and, after surviving a bit of touring with the Bad Boy Family reunion tour, the group is finally been releasing music as a four-piece again.

About a month ago, the group dropped the audio for their first new song, “Strawberry”. The song got a mild response from people, but I actually love this track despite the deflated intro, which misrepresents the energy of the rest of the track.

The group didn’t get discouraged and announced that there will be a new album. It’ll be their first album in 12 years.  The announcement got backed up by another release, “Dangerous Games”. The ballad is just as strong as “Strawberry”, but the slow jam is receiving much more attention from bloggers and regular press. It’s therefore being seen as their first comeback single.

The new album will be called “Q Mike Slim Daron”, which sounds like they are opening ways for them to separate later down the line. Maybe this comeback is a one album deal? But let’s be positive and keep in mind that Boyz II Men also once had an album with all their individual names as the title and they are still together (minus one).

At least 112 also seem to have a bit of a plan to fuel the comeback. They will be featured in an episode of Unsung, an official video will follow for “Dangerous Games” and they’ve started to do some press stuff and public appearances to make sure they get the attention required to push the comeback further. No games, but no guaranteed output either, but well played so far, from what I can tell.
