I’d received news about a new Jennifer Hudson release, literally in the last few minutes of my day, but I’m so glad I decided to check this one out. It’s worth a blog. As unpredictable it may have been for me to like Goldfrapp, in my last blog, you could probably guess that I would fall for this track, in a heartbeat. This is my jam of the week!
“Mr DJ” brings back that sweet retro 80s and 90s sound and is linked to other artists such as Babyface and Ma$e (who does a feature) to boot! Things couldn’t sound any more promising. Oh, wait…. The launch of the video was pretty impressive too. It had a Netflix premier. So, unlike where you may expect to find your new music videos, now you also have to check in with Netflix. What can I say? Any content is content in the streaming business.
I do take this song as a little bit of fun for everyone involved, even for Adam Sandler who plays a major part in the video. It’s like it’s offered everyone the excuse to reminisce and goof off with the video, but it is actually a trailer for an upcoming movie. Secretly though I’m hoping it might have the unexpected side effect to put Babyface and Ma$e back in the picture. Even if it’s just for a moment, because listening to this track, I just realized I hadn’t listened to any Ma$e tracks since the 90s, probably.
The lyrics to this song are also more in line with what you would hear in the 80s and 90s, so they really stayed true to the time period. And we already know that Jennifer can make any song sound good. She’s often caught on camera singing along with the most unexpected tracks, like Adele, and making them sound like you never know they could.
The release of this song, is perfect timing for Jennifer Hudson. She’s one of the latest judges on The Voice US and for her it’s kind of like coming full circle. She was discovered on a similar talent show herself and has been able to make an impressive career for herself, even successfully branching out in acting. With her role as a judge, she’s now also a fashion icon for the first time ever. One of the perks (or not) of being on television.
