I’m not the biggest Rihanna fan. There’s a side to her that I don’t like, but then there are aspects of her and her artistry that I do like. It’s always a surprise to find out how I respond to a new release of hers, but this time, I absolutely LOVE what she’s done on “Love On The Brain”.
I had already picked up the response to this track when it was just an album track. I saw that many were people covering it and that is love seeping through right there. You know something is hot when a lot of people are singing it on YouTube.
Now, the song is finally seen a release as a single and, to be honest, I don’t know what took her so long?! I have never heard Rihanna like this! What Rihanna can do with her voice is amazing (on recordings anyway. I have not been so impressed with her live performances).
It’s like she has a different voice every other year or so. It’s clear it’s something she’s working on, because this sounds so far away from the nasal sound she used to have. In fact, I was even convinced that someone else was also singing lead, a male falsetto. It was only until I really started to listen very closely that I heard the features of Rihanna’s voice. It was her doing all the vocals, after all.
The retro sound of the music itself has got everyone talking about what the song reminds them off. It makes it sound very familiar, but so far I’ve not heard any references that I agree with.
With the switching of vocal registers it’s an exciting and intriguing song to listen to, while the chorus is still catchy as you would expect from a Rihanna song. Because of this, the song actually reminds me of Prince and Maxwell. Most probably because of the vocal melodies.
While this song is hitting the radios, Rihanna is enjoying her first holiday for this year. One thing I like about her, is that she does enjoy the perks of her success and holidays a few times a year. I would do the same if I could.
