Beyoncé has most definitely been the talk of the town for the past few weeks. Out of the blue, there was the announcement of being pregnant with twins, which completely overtook the commercial release of a new advert campaign for her sports line, which everybody missed. Then, Adele broke her Grammy in half, purely by accident of course, to share it with Beyoncé. Last but not least, Beyoncé and her mom raised their middle finger to the press during a family outing.
All this was enough to keep the press busy, but in the meantime, Beyoncé’s marketing team did what it always does: Release more music to keep the talk going.
And so, videos were released for “Sandcastles” and “Love Drought”, and DJ Khaled released the audio of his collaboration with her and hubby Jay Z, “Shining”. It’s hard to say which one is my favorite. I love them all and the videos are, as expected, super artistic and personal.
“Love Drought” is most definitely the most experimental in music and features airy vocals and harmonies that sound like a dream. “Sandcastles” is an authentic ballad, also with great harmonies and with Jay Z in the video. It’s easy to get into and a great song to listen to. The song is a clear cut hint at all the rumors t about the couple being troubled a few years ago and the struggle that followed. And look at where they are at now. The love shows in the video.
The collaboration with DJ Khaled has brought forth an interesting mix of dance and hip hop. Beyoncé’s voice grinds in low notes and there are moments where I wonder if she’s not had a little bit of help from technology. She is singing, but it’s almost like she’s rapping too and you know that she can pull off both well.
It’s hip hop in its purest form in terms of melodies and lyrics, and it contains the first recorded shout out to the new twins, but it’s also managed to stay true to DJ Khaled reputation as a club DJ. With a powerhouse couple at your side, how could you miss, right?
Altogether, it is a bit of an overkill of Beyoncé stuff. Watching her has always tired me out. I know I‘ve been accused of being too productive over the years, but this woman is insanely productive. Even I would advise her to slow down, sometimes.
