We are just a little over a week into the new year and already it is giving us some surprises, especially for r&b fans. The upcoming mini-series about New Edition has been directing the attention back to the group that considers itself the founders of many boybands that followed later (like the Backstreet Boys and N Sync). With all eyes on its (former) members, everyone is either releasing something, going on tour (Johnny Gill) or even trying their hand at cooking (Bobby Brown).
As I’m not a food blogger and Johnny Gill is touring far away from where I am right now, I can only blog about one thing: The new single by Bell Biv DeVoe.
Even though Bell Biv DeVoe are very capable of creating great music on their own, they have recruited the help of none other than SWV and the results are sweet. Great harmonies and simply said, just a really great r&b song. It’s called “Finally” and it is one of those songs that is completely timeless.
The mid-tempo jam is a positive one that just portraits the joy of a happy relationship (hallelujah, no heartbreak song this time!).
Due to all the harmonies, it’s no surprise that the song takes you back to the days in which these groups were probably at the height of their fame; the 90s. By then, Bell Biv DeVoe had built up a reputation as great songwriters , especially after their hit “Poison” and Michael Bivins played a key role in discovering new talent such as Boyz II Men.
SWV became one of those girl groups that stayed around the longest with hit songs like “Weak” and “The One”. After a short break SWV made a successful return last year, with a new album and a few, by critics and r&B fans, well received singles. It’s especially their vocals that give “Finally” that familiar sound that make you feel like you’re coming home.
The song, however, is in no way old fashioned. It blends in well with today’s music. The collaboration between the two was kept secret very well, too. The release took everyone by surprise and the reactions by r&b fans and r&b music bloggers have been only positive to the track.
I’m hoping the groups will create a video for this song. It just could be pretty iconic to have these big acts from the 90s in one video. The song is available on streaming services and download stores, at this time.
