There's something about hearing the sound of T-Boz's voice again that makes it sound so right. You instantly forget the slight worry you may have had whether that new TLC album would ever see the light of day. Yep, you are reading it right. TLC will really be back.
The group, now existing of Chili and T-Boz after Lisa "Left Eye"'s sudden death in 2002, were the first of a few bigger acts to raise money through Kickstarter. And with this, I mean big money. They raised well over the needed $150,000 somewhere at the beginning of last year. This makes them the last to still have to release the record they produced with that money. Needless to say, investors got a little impatient along the way and turned to social media to ridicule the girls.
Even though they were a trending topic accused of taking everyone's money and then running with it, the girls stood their ground though and fought back to the haters and criticism. Then, in October TLC finally released two teasers. One of the song "Joy Ride" and the other of "Haters".
"Joy Ride" immediately jumps out. The track has that familiar TLC sound that makes you feel that the group has really returned. In "Haters", they tried to mix their sounds with today's R&B sound and I'm still not sure whether that has turned out right.
TLC have reportedly recorded over 36 songs from which they are currently making a selection to put the album together. Even though both members have done some interviews about it, I am still left with questions like who did they work with. I'm just very curious to find out if they kept their rebellious spirit, humor and sound. After all, it's been 14 years since the release of their last album and a loss like losing a band member is sure to have made them grow up fast.
When it comes to the singing, there really is very little difference between TLC now and then, but you can't help but miss that sound Lisa put to their tracks. It wouldn't surprise me if they looked through any recording of her they may have had still lying around to have her appear on the album after all. We'll have to wait just a little while longer to find out. The album will be released in the first quarter of 2017. The previews of the two songs can be found right here.
