Anyone who loves R&B music knows Boyz II Men. Since I've seen their show in Las Vegas, I will never underestimate their popularity every again. Out in Europe, they haven't had commercial success in ages and I was quick to think they were kind of over and done with, but they are far from over. Their impact still weighs in on the R&B scene and the group has become legendary because of it.
Still, I had to find out this new release by just running into it. I got curious about a joint tour they are planning to do with New Kids On The Block and Paula Abdul next year, when I ran into one or two articles mentioning the release of a new Christmas song.
It's been 13 years since the release of their Christmas album, "Christmas Interpretations", which features their version of "Let It Snow", which is still being played very often around this time of year. So, you could say that it was high time for something new.
Luckily for Boyz II Men, and us, Amazon approached them with the perfect opportunity to even stay in the theme of typical winter weather. Their new song is called "Snowy Day" and it soundtracks the animated special, based on a children's picture book called "The Snowy Day".
Unlike "Let It Snow", "The Snowy Day" is an original song, also based on the book. It also brings Boyz II Men back to what they are best known for: a cappella harmonies. The song has no music whatsoever, which reminisces to "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye to Yesterday" that stems from their "Cooleyhighharmony" debut album. The only difference is, the lack of a bass vocal that would make it sound just slight fuller than it does now.
However, this is quickly forgiven due to the fact that every word just takes you back in time. Other than it reminding you of the classic Boyz II Men sound, it also does the trick to make you look forward to worst side of the winter – sorry, I'm not a fan of snow – and it makes you look forward to Christmas. Job well done by the boyz... or men... or well, something in between if you go on the reports about their personal lives and the behavior contradicting everything you would expect Boyz II Men to stand for. Enough said. (insert smiley with zipped mouth here)
