It’s not often that I get enthusiastic about an artist re-doing one of their songs, and, indeed, when I heard that Black Eyed Peas had made a new version of “Where Is The Love”, I got worried.
I understood why they felt the need to do it. Just turn on the news and you start to wonder what happened to the world and the people in it, so the message of the song is just as accurate today as it was when it was initially released, in 2003.
When I heard all kinds of celebrities got involved in the video, I still wasn’t really triggered to hear it. Yep, I was still worrying. After all, it’s still a charity song and that can become pretty cheesy, but when I saw the amount of views the video had received, I thought it probably wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
“#WhereIsTheLove” is completely reproduced and turned into a bit of a ballad. It’s contemporary, somewhat adjusted in its lyrics, and it’s really good. I know Will.I.Am is one the best producers around, but recently, he has released some music that made me think he may have been losing his magic touch.
This track has restored my faith… in Will.I.Am. Still, the video has not left me untouched in terms of the message at hand. The unity of the celebrities that have appeared in this video is really impressive. Combined with the powerful pictures, that we all have seen in the news, it’s pretty hard not to get emotional and feel the message that the song is telling you. At the end, you do feel a bit hopeless, but also understood. It’s the feeling you feel when you see the news. Ah, we’ve come full circle.
One of the things that surprised me was Fergie’s appearance. I had heard rumors that the Black Eyed Peas were looking to replace her as she is doing her solo thing, right now. For whatever reason, I think she can’t be replaced, so seeing her back is seeing things in the way they should be.
