Henderson's powerful voice, personal lyrics, and stylish look inspired by the vintage fashion with which she had been enchanted since childhood, combined with the public's fond memories of her performances on The X Factor, shot her to fame at such a young age.
Her song "Ghost" debuted on the U.K. singles chart at number one, spending eight consecutive weeks in the Top Five.
This song was co-written by OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder who also wrote songs for other female artists such as Leona Lewis and Ellie Goulding.
Henderson told Radio.com that she and Tedder wrote the song in just twenty minutes and described it as a "soulful song with a twist." She added: "It's about this someone or something that just has a hold over you, tormenting you, you're trying to run away from it, but you just can't. And I think a lot of people can relate in so many different ways."
I agree with what she said about her song because basically it is what the song evokes, the feeling of dread of not having moved on yet from a relationship or an unpleasant event in someone’s life. People feel that kind of feeling in one way or another and this song works like a charm to get all those locked up feelings burst out into a powerful melody.
Ella Henderson told the story behind the song to MTV News. "When I sat down with Ryan he asked, 'If there's one thing you want to say to the world or show the world, what would that be?' By this point, I was just saying to him how frustrated I was at the fact that I had taken two years of writing and a lot of traveling in the UK and America - writing my album - but I still felt like I hadn't found my first single. I said, 'I can't eat, I can't sleep, it's just really annoying me that I can't get this song.' And he said, 'Yeah, it's like you're bring haunted by a ghost or something.' And that's how it came about."
It is amazing to know that this single was effortlessly brought about in just a short span of time but with a very high quality product. It is an anthemic song, allowing the listeners to just sing their hearts out along to this -- especially those who are still haunted by the ghost in their past relationships or the demons inside themselves.
