Remember Brandy? Yes, precisely the one who use to be our R&B dope in the 90s. The latest news brewing on the Brandy front is a new single. And, much to our surprise (pleasant of course) her sound seems to have undergone quite a bit of a facelift.
Here’s a peek into the concerned song, “Begging and Pleading”
The song was launched on January 5th and it sounds like a 360 degree turnaround from what we’ve heard from Brandy so far. For one, it’s distinctively jazzier in approach and you cannot miss the bluesy riffs it opens with. However, it still retains its R&B elements (those vocal harmonies and hook-beat).The song has been produced by Pop and Oak and is an interesting mix of elements from different genres, if I must point out. It is quite a fresh sound to be experimenting with and Brandy is ace on the vocals, as always.
Perhaps, this makes you wonder where Brandy has been all these years. I bet you still remember her vocal prizefight with Monica in “The Boy Is Mine”. It definitely was one of the songs that received most of the radio play time back in the day, but unfortunately we have heard very little from Brandy thereafter. Somehow, she just happened to disappear from the mainstream radar. And, boy, did we miss her gorgeous music.
Thankfully, she didn’t completely vanish though. And has kept her musical career very much alive! And, she has been down at Broadway. Last year, she promised an EP with DJ Camper, but not much has been heard on that front yet.
From the box, some of her music in recent times has been a lot closer to her previous repertoire. “The Girl Is Mine”, a mashup song with 99 Souls, a Brit production duo, features her on the vocals, crooning lines drawing inspiration from “The Boy Is Mine”.
Also, her single “Wildest Dreams” from 2012 is an out and out R&B number.
This makes us wonder what led to her experimenting with her sound right now and whether or not it is just a one- time thing. Or maybe it’s about time to give a mature twist to her music. The recent song does sound much more tasteful in its approach. It also seems like perfect timing since Monica too released some new music not too long ago – and guess what, she has been working with Pop and Oak as well! A coincidence? I sure hope not, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed in hopes for a collaboration soon.
