Silk´s silky smooth plead to like them

I’ve been writing about many comebacks from 90s, early 2000s, R&B groups, but not many articles and blogs have triggered as much of a response as a retweet I’ve given about an interview with, 90s R&B group, Silk.

Silk broke through commercially with “Freak Me”, later also covered by UK boyband Another Level. The song made it to the regular charts, internationally and got the group out and about, touring the world. After, their success continued on the R&B charts.

The group has officially never quit, so it’s hard to really speak of a comeback, but they haven’t released any new music since 2006. The only, related music, since comes from Gary Jenkins, otherwise known as Lil G. He has been part of the super group Blayse, formed with former members from Blackstreet and Az Yet. They dropped a few tracks to radio, but never made it big, unfortunately. They really had some good tracks, but so did Silk!

It’s clear that Silk are about to embark on something. They’ve been doing interviews with many of the biggest R&B (blog) music sites to announce plans for a new album for a few months now and the response I’ve seen happening, is something others have noticed too.

In the short time this group has enjoyed success they have built up a very loyal fan base and now is the time for that classic R&B sound to come back. In the interviews they have admitted that they will stay true to their original sound and their new single “Love 4 U 2 Like Me” definitely proves that.

The slow song is your typical silky smooth R&B song about trying to get a woman to notice you. It’s produced by Wirlie Morris, a well-known producer in the Atlanta area who’s also worked with Dru Hill, Charlie Wilson and Keith Sweat. During interviews with the group, it sounds like he’s been part of more of the new music coming from Silk.

I love seeing the guys back, and I love the fact that the love interest/leading lady in the video is not like 18 years old, but they’ve chosen someone to somewhat maturely match the fact that the group has matured as well.

With all the interest my retweet had gotten, I’m actually surprised the video hasn’t had more views (a little over 6,500 views so far), but as I said, they are currently clearly promoting their plans and this is sure to have some impact on things. They sure seem to have a lot of support from fans, press and bloggers, so it’s looking good.

The new album, “Quiet Storm”, has just been released on March 18th.
