Christina Milian's Liar put her back on my radar

For me, Christina Milian is a name from the past. I have not really kept up with her music since her hit single “AM to PM” in 2001, though I have seen her name pop up whenever she released new music. And yes, I also heard “Dip it Low” and saw the video, which I think was her biggest hit. But, I actually thought she had turned to acting some time ago and was more popular with that.

But then comes her new single “Liar”. May I just admit, with the cursing aside, that I’m really feeling this track. And as much as I think the cursing is getting a little out of hand on song lyrics lately, I kind of feel that even that is somewhat justified in this case. Simply because some people just drive you to curse at what they do.

In recent years, Christina has reached my social media timelines only because of her relationship with Lil Wayne, which ended in September 2015. Lots of other press outlets are guessing that the candid track, “Liar”, is about him. If the whole EP, called “4U”, is a personal one for Christina, it could very well have been great therapy to drag her through the heartbreak.

The video has definitely put her back on my radar. It´s simple, but effective. Every video like this will always remind you of Sinead O´Connor´s “Nothing Compares 2 U”, which seems to be the first video where an artist performs the song straight to the camera and delivers the pure emotion we can all relate to. Christina has done a wonderful job there. The video is beautiful.

It shows a close up of her face, while she sings the song. The lighting is dim and not meant to give her  extra star power. Instead, it’s supporting her being human. Her eyes, her moves, her twitches tell the story of the hurt and anger caused by a cheating boyfriend. The close ups get accompanied by dark silhouettes of her. As I said, pure and simple.

From what I remember her from, musically, this song is obviously not as upbeat as some of the stuff I knew from her. For some reason , I think it gives her the maturity that I, apparently, had missed from not keeping up with her. So, I got curious about that EP and listened to the rest.

The rest of “4U” is actually pretty straight forward R&B, making “Liar” the strongest track for me. Other songs, especially “Like Me”, carry the sound I actually assumed from her. I can definitely see why “Liar” was chosen as the single. It follows up “Do It”, which also comes from the EP.
