Soul'd Out

I recently got reminded what made me take up music by these amazing bunch of ladies. Ladies of Soul, as they call themselves, are a live performing outfit that I happened to stumble upon, who play their brand of energetic Soul and R&B with specks of funk elements thrown in. Well, I’ve got to thank Sheila E for that! Sheila E happened to promote them on her page and also played at a venue with them and I am an unabashed follower of Sheila E.

So, what got me so interested in them even though they are a fairly new outfit (formed only back in 2012)? Well, it’s the vibe they have going – the instruments playing, the command, impeccable vocal harmonies and their presence on stage. They are a vibrant bunch of mature ladies who know their stuff. They know how to have fun on stage and that makes me want to be best friends with them and go out for cocktail nights with. I just can’t help it – these are my kind of a girl gang, people, don’t judge me!

Ok, I won’t get too carried away. But, like I said this is why I had gotten into music – the idea of being part of an all girl’s band and playing my kind of music. Because an all-female energy in music is a totally different level all together, there are nuances that only ladies can add to the soul of music.

Now, talking about their music – as I already pointed out is a beautiful mix of pop and soul. They cover everybody from Chic to Whitney Houston to Michael Jackson. And they have 3 original singles out till date – I’ll Carry You, Up Till Now, and Feel Good.

The line-up includes Trijntje Oosterhuis, Berget Lewis, Edsilia Rombley, Glennis Grace and Candy Dulfer on sax. The originals all have similar dance, upbeat rhythm to them. While “I’ll Carry You” is more on the pop edge than Soul, I’d prefer them to stick to their signature style of soul- funk as I think it can be their defining niche. My favorite clearly has to be “Up till Now”.

I’ll be patiently waiting for more material from them. They don’t exactly have the commercial feel to them so I’m guessing the extra-popularity might be a too much to ask for but they are definitely a band I’d like to recommend to my readers. Betting my money on you –Ladies of Soul, and you know who to call if you need someone to fill in for a day! *wink*
