We sat down with FRASE in an interview below.

What is the inspiration behind your latest single?

A canoe trip in northern Quebec changed my life when I was a teenager. It was so hard and gruelling yet beautiful and life affirming. Ever since, I have learned to move through adversity and overcome my fears.  The inspiration for this song came out of a similar life experience while trying to make it as a musician in Montreal. I applied that same philosophy keep “Paddlin’” – and opportunities presented themselves. What made you discover your passion for creating an eclectic blend of your own sound?

I have gone through several phases in my lifetime of listening to music. The first being 90's house music as a kid, then Golden era hip hop as a teenager, then I went to Jazz school in my early 20's and when I got out listened to a lot of dub-reggae and electronic music. Now in my 30's I am writing music that kinda blends all those influences together. I am passionate about making music that is original yet timeless and familiar.

What places in your mind do you channel to craft your songs?

I always gravitate towards sounds that soothe and calm my restless mind combined with a nice beat and melody that carries me away.

What are your favorite venues to perform at? and if you had to choose, do you feel more comfortable in the studio or onstage, and why?

I love playing at outdoor festivals because of the vibe that people bring to them. There is lots of open space with freedom to move and a nice breeze . I am very comfortable on stage but I also love the studio. I am quite introverted in everyday life and love to cocoon in the studio but when I get on stage I open up and am quite extroverted and animated.

How do you create your songs? What is the process like? Does it take you days, weeks, even longer? How does the perfect piece come together?

Paddlin' took 4 years to finish! I had the lyrics and flow for a long time before I found the right chord progression and beat. My songs are written in all types of ways though. Sometimes it starts on the acoustic guitar with me just exploring , vibin' out and freestylin' for melodies and catchy phrases. Other times it starts with beat making and exploring chords and drum sounds in Ableton live and then I will sit and write lyrics over top once I have a cohesive beat.

How did you create a sound throughout time that is so uniquely your own? What defines your sound to you?

I am the sum of all my influences and experiences. I have travelled the world and explored lots of different cultures through art. I like to read books and listen to podcasts and think deeply about humanity and the world, I think it comes out in my music and that is what makes it my sound.

This year is shaping up to be a great musical year for you. What do you hope to accomplish as we head further in 2019?

I have one more Single coming out November 19th , that makes 5 singles and two video's this year, as well     as having my first born child in July! So there has been lots of output this year. I want to continue finishing songs and releasing a full length album in 2020, with our sights set on getting into the west coast American market for shows and festivals.
