SundaySpotlight: Marcus and Martinus

Music phenomenons of the past 2 decade are an interesting topic that should be diligently explored. Why do some bands attract so much attention, and build a fanbase that walks on a thin line between admiration and fanaticism? I will take the second half of the 90s and current moment as two comparable parameters to convey my brief observation of the rise of Marcus and Martinus.

When it comes to the 90s, there's no doubt that Backstreet Boys were the most popular boy band. N*Sync and Westlife also fall into this category. The 90s were also fascinating because of the fertility of the fame of girl bands that were comprised of women who differed both in character and physical appearance. Best example for this are Spice Girls, since every teenage girl was identifying with some of this full girl power band's members. After Spice Girls, there was an expansion of similar girl band concepts with the biggest of them including Destiny's Child, TLC, All Saints. In the 00s, we had Sugababes, Atomic Kitten, and Girls Aloud. And let's not forget about Russian lesbian duo t.A.T.u. because All The Things She Said and Not Gonna Get Us were everything you wished girl bands to sound like.

To draw a parallel to the current times is not a difficult task, as the frenzy among kids is still on, and the only thing that changed are faces to who these kids get attached to. If you want to know what is the biggest boy band attraction at the moment, I will tell you. It's Marcus and Martinus. These twins came from Norwegian city Trofors, and they are certainly on their way to take over the world by seducing every teenager's heart. Why? Well, let me conclude this week's SundaySpotlight with a reductive, yet straightforward conclusion: as music consumers are becoming younger and younger, so do their idols. Justin Timber is over. Long live Marcus and Martinus.
