North London duo IDER (Megan Markwick and Lily Somerville) began gaining attention for their delectable brand of delicate, intimate and organic electropop when they released “Pulse” in July last year. Since then, the duo have explored new dimensions of their aesthetic and signed a record deal with Glassnote Records.
On their latest song “Body Love”, Markwick and Somerville achieve a breathtakingly intricate balance between a heavy heart and a buoyant sense of freedom. The minimalist backdrop – light percussion, muted piano keys – allow their angelic harmonies to unravel a poignant tale of heartbreak and emotional growth. There are shades of regret (‘Tell me what it's like to love me/ Tell me what went wrong’) and self-blame (‘Kicking around for my pride like an animal’), but the assonance-heavy chorus bursts to the brim with a hard-won sense of joy and gratitude: ‘What's the best love in the world?/ My body love/ Thank you for tripping me onto my body love’. A broken heart heals, the learns to love again despite the scars.
The duo described the track as a “‘thank you for breaking my heart’ sort of thing” to ,DIY and described the trajectory towards optimism and positivity that they intended to flesh out in the song:
“The song accidentally became a bit of a journey for us, because we wrote it over a period of time. It started with the end of a relationship and expresses all of the doubt and loneliness that comes with that. Towards the end however, there’s a sense of acceptance and strength that appears which has actually become the purpose of the song for us”.
