On “Money”, a recent single from electro-pop duo Anna Of The North’s upcoming debut album Lovers (out on 8 September), Norwegian vocalist Anna Lotterud issues warnings about a single-minded gold digger in honeyed tones: ‘Open your eyes, my love/ She's not the one for you/ Just wants one thing from you/ Your money, your money’.
The song’s pristine and minimalist electro-pop production (courtesy of Kiwi producer Brady Daniell-Smith) matches Lotterud’s delicate vocals with soft beats and airy synths. The result is a perfect earworm that cocoons the track’s barbed message (“Money goes out to all those fake ass people. Users who use those around them; for money, for status, for fame. S/O to fake friends and gold-diggers!”) in blissed-out vibes:
'Don't want your bodyDon't like your friendsShe don't give a damn about your future plansDon't like your motherDon't like your tasteDon't even like the look of your pretty faceYour favorite t-shirtYour favorite dressAll your favorite memories lying in the trashDon't want your babyDon't want your loveShe just wants your money, honey, open up'
Lyrics: Genius
There is seldom any love or understanding of the other woman, but it is rare for her to be this one-dimensional.
