The Long Haul

In anticipation of his upcoming sophomore album The Space Between (out June 9), London  singer-songwriter and guitarist Fyfe (Paul Dixon) has released "Belong": a breezy and pleasant pop duet with Kiwi songstress Kimbra. The mid tempo track has a catchy, minimalist melody that allows both their vocals to take center stage as they harmonize and echo one another in their desire for a more stable and lasting romantic relationship (a sentiment which Kimbra has also explored on her own):

'Can we make a home together? We can work it even if it’s tightCome on let’s find a compromiseDon’t you know, don’t you know, don’t you knowI lost myself in endless streetsWith headlights glaring back at meI promise you it’s not defeatIt’s just that now I want to beI want to belongDon’t you know we're physical and we’re spiritual?I’m tired of being a stranger to myselfI’m tired of all the hotel rooms waiting up for youI want to belongSo let’s turn around from this ‘cause I’m tired of this but I won’t give upBelongLet’s give ourselves a chance together, we can make it last forever'

Lyrics: Genius

It is particularly refreshing to see pop culture messages that emphasize the 'spiritual' alongside the 'physical', given the prominence of app-enabled hook-up culture in the mainstream consciousness. The values being highlighted here - making a home together, tiring of the transcience of streetlights and hotel rooms, making it last forever - might seem quaint and old-fashioned, but the modern synth-led beat provides a sonic update that helps the desire for a long term attachment seem timeless and universal.
