A single harmony

It’s a matter of fact, mostly, that girl groups and boybands don’t last forever. Most artists entering in the group see it as a stepping stone to a bigger solo career. And then it all becomes a matter of who leaves first….

In Fifth Harmony, it was Camila Cabello. I think the biggest sign of someone about to leave a group, for whatever reason, is usually when they stop appearing or disappear on stage with the rest of the group. It wasn’t long after Camila’s “anxiety issues”, which prevented her to take the stage with Fifth Harmony, that she left the group for real.

I feel kind of foolish for falling for the anxiety thing and even blogging about it, because I actually think you need more balls to go after a solo career coming from something as big as Fifth Harmony then you need to be in a group. But, Camila has been taking baby steps since. Big baby steps, but still, she’s only released collaborations so far.

All eyes are on her and her collaborations are not only big hits, worldwide, but have also been well received by the music critics and press. Expectations are currently really high surrounding her persona. She’s already been dubbed a great talent (by One Republic’s Ryan Tedder), had some great reviews of her performances and some Latin press have already printed she could be the biggest Latin artist we’ve seen so far. These are not exactly expectations that will help someone with anxiety issues.

Perhaps Camila’s in a better place now. She’s been working on her debut solo album for a few months now and says she’s let her be inspired by Shakira, Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Cuban music she heard while growing up. This is, somehow, giving me the feeling we are going to get something slightly different from her from what we’ve heard so far via her collaborations with Pitbull and Machine Gun Kelly.

The pressure is high on the first one to leave a successful group, but history has also shown us that the odds of a highly successful potential solo career are also the biggest for the first one out. The first solo music release from Camila is expected May 5th.
