A Song that Tackles Plastic Surgery

It’s not the first time songs took on social issues with finesse, but Melanie Martinez just got to a graphic and creative level with Mrs. Potato Head. The lyrics of this song were well thought out and are darkly poetic. I love the way it uses reverse psychology in showing people to love themselves with phrases like “Don’t be dramatic it’s only some plastic. No one will love you if you’re unattractive.”

The music video features a tragic story of a woman who got plastic surgery for her lover and both of them regretted it. Amidst the video, you can see her skin slowly removed through surgery and I could just imagine the pain a person goes through during those times. In the end, her lover cheated and she was left with a damaged face and a broken heart. You can watch the video itself below:

This whole song reminds me of an equally striking short film by Frederic Doazan entitled Super Venus. It is a very detailed animation that shows us the truth of what happens after cosmetic surgery. You can also view the film below:

Actually, someone created a fan-made music video using the audio of Mrs. Potato Head and the visuals of Super Venus to create the ultimate message about this issue.

Let this article be a lesson to all of us to love ourselves and be contented on what we have. Music is a powerful aspect in our lives and I hope a lot of you will look at yourselves in a more confident way after listening to Mrs. Potato Head.

Spread the word and be proud of who you are!
