Lowly, A Brand New Newborn of DreamPop

I want to dream that you dream about the same dreampop next to me. If I was to write a song to my loved one, this is how it would begun. Not only that dreampop represents one of my favorite sub-pop genres, but I also keep on being in awe with all the great artists that seem to pop out of nowhere. Following review is a thank you note to everyone who is creating within this genre.

After several singles and EP release Sing Way Into Me, Danish collective Lowly has finally dropped their debut full-length album. Although this group of five is not a political crowd, the record was created during the biggest migration crisis, so they insisted to name it Heba. In this manner, they paid homage to their Syrian friend who managed to reach Denmark, after numerous tumultuous ups and downs. Lowly is clearly revolted with the lack of understanding, empathy and humanity in Europe.

Apropos music, this is a top notch combination of dreampop, experimental indie sound and shoegaze. The members of the band describe this amalgam as noise pop. The atmosphere spreads from melancholic to ecstatic. The core of the band are Nanna Schannong and Soffie Viemo whose oniric vocals fit perfectly with sophisticated orchestrations of the melodies supported by electronic devices.

One of the best moments on the record is track Deer Eyes, with touching verse Have you ever felt so lonely that you could map it on your body. Then, Morning shows the band in their skillful mixture of pop psychedelic with dance beats. Prepare The Lake demonstrates how female vocal can pacify cold and obscure interplay of synths and drums, while Word represents the most exuberant song on the record.

If your ears like Warpaint, Camera Obscura and Chairlift, do not let the debut by Lowly go under your radar. Refreshing record is not only suitable for spring time, but can also serve you well during the moisty summer nights. I will keep an eye on Lowly and update you about their next career moves. I have a feeling they sound great live.
