Kiesza returns to the guitar

No one has walked onto the music scene as impressive as Kiesza. With her red dancing shoes, she seemed set to take over the world, but her impression quickly faded. A few songs after her big hit, “Hideaway”, she seemed to have disappeared mostly. It turned out Kiesza had spent that time mainly writing for others and she also enjoyed a bit of a break.  Now, she’s back and she's released a new song called “Dearly Beloved”. It’s a song that’s slightly at the other side of the spectrum in pop music compared to “Hideaway”. Back then, it looked like Kiesza was going to be a new sensation in electronic pop, but the synthesized sounds have been replaced by a guitar in her new song. And that’s not the only change.

With a new song, Kiesza also introduces a new look. Her signature knotted hair has been let loose, giving her a less strict and cold look. In the video, she’s colorfully reminiscent to the 80s and 90s. The message is clear. Kiesza is ready to show the world a different side to her.  In her music, it's actually not such a huge stretch for her once you get to know a little of her background. She's always progressed her music by crossing over from one genre to the next. And her first instrument of choice was the guitar. It just so happens she was introduced to the world as an electro-pop artist. What stands out on "Dearly Beloved" are her vocals. She's a strong vocalist with a thin, squeaky pop voice that reminds me a little of many female 80s pop singers. I spot it in the timbre and pitch of the voice. But make no mistake, Kiesza is very skillful.  When I heard the title for the first time, I thought the song may refer to Prince. Especially with the images of the video in which she’s playing the guitar, but that was absolutely wrong of me. When she released the video, she admitted that the white electric guitar belongs to a friend that passed away and she started playing it in her memory. And so we’ve come full circle. This explains why the guitar has taken a leading role in her music today.
