Ah, it's finally arrived. "New" music by Jessie J. Yes "new" (in quotes), because the song is a cover of the Frankie Valli song called "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You". But don't feel disappointed that her first new track in about a year (or so) is a cover.
The song has been reworked completely and it's, by far, become one of the best versions I've heard of this classic. The old Frankie Valli version stems from '67. Well before my time, and you may only know it if you are one of those people who went to see the Jersey Boys musical. I'm sure it passes as one of his many musical highlights.
Since, it's become one of those songs to always appear in a reworked cover version, almost every decade. Boys Town Gang introduced me to the song, early 80s. Their disco pop version still referred back to the original, but updated it very well.
In the 90s it got reworked to a credible hip hop/R&B version by non other than Lauryn Hill, who even went on to win an award for her vocal performance on the track. But most other covers of this song usually sticked within the dance genre.
Jessie J's version turns it into a different kind of R&B rendition with lots of adlibing and flexing of vocal muscles. She has rearranged the song completely and has added completely new verses, including an interesting theatrical/musical type intro.
The song is not really an official kick off for a new album or anything. It was recorded for her deal with Make Up For Ever. With this song she kicks off their joint #Iamanartist campaign, which will last throughout 2017. A video, or rather a 3 minute long make up commercial type of video, has been made to accompany the kick off, which shows off all of Jessie J's famous looks and more.
Of course Jessie J is known for changing her appearance every 5 seconds, but recently she's taken her physique even further by doing a little body building. Her Instagram followers are often surprised by photos of her even more toned body. This girl has seriously been working out.
With the new year coming, I'm hoping she will release more new music in the 2017, but I can't find any news, rumors or anything about it. Guess we'll just have to keep our eyes on her.
