Cheeky like a Williams

Just a few months ago, Robbie Williams inked a new deal with a new major record label, leaving the label, whom he joined once he went solo, behind. In the statement to announce his move, he promised a new album by the end of the year and new music has now arrived.

Robbie released his new single, “Party Like A Russian”, and it sounds like a modern march with a steady politic statement. I even gave him credit to sing those words in such a way it sounds like he’s singing the word “corruption” (or is that just me hearing that?!)

For some reason, Robbie with his own arrogance, big mouth and small heart, is the perfect artist to get away with songs like these. I’m glad he’s back, because he does have a habit to spice things up with a little bit of humor, tongue n cheek and a good dose of reality and truth. Even in a song like “Party Like A Russian”. Of course, that didn’t go down too well in Russia itself, who banned him from performing there now. That was to be predicted though.

What wasn’t to be predicted was that the song didn’t do too well in the charts in the UK either. Many are speculating that he may have gone a little too far in his controversial return. Still, I think it is so Robbie. In both sound and lyrics. Come on, Robbie wouldn’t be Robbie if he weren’t cheeky like that.

But, unlike other launches of his albums, this time around, Robbie didn’t provide us anything surprising, nor anything really new for him. He just kept things going at the same level as always: Entertaining and cleverly written. It’s not only been enough to provide him with a long lasting career in music, but it’s also put him up for Icon award at the Brit awards this year. Somehow, I think the UK still loves him. Not sure about the Russians though.
